Therapists in tree-mendous bid to save oak

Healing session a hands off affair

Hundreds of Reiki therapists are to join forces to hold a huge healing session in a bid to cure the ailing Midsummer Place oak tree.

But the mass hands-on energy session planned for Sunday afternoon, will have to be hands OFF – because the management say it could be 'inappropriate' for their centre.

"There's nothing inappropriate about Reiki. And the last laugh will be on us if it helps this poor tree," said Bradwell Village practitioner Jean Wickson.

She had offered, through the Citizen, to organise a large group of therapists to surround the famous tree and channel the 'power of positive Reiki energy' into its roots, trunk and sadly depleted branches.

But Midsummer Place manager Martin Hindson politely refused, saying: "I think it may be construed as inappropriate in that we could be perceived as not taking the tree's difficulties seriously."

Jean, who takes numerous referrals from the NHS, refused to be deterred.

"The beauty of Reiki is that it can be done from a distance," she said.

"We'll still hold the session for the tree – but we'll do it from my house," she declared.

"And we can ask every other Reiki practitioner in the city and all over the country to join in at exactly the same time 3.30pm on Sunday.

"That way the tree will get a huge amount of healing."

Jean believes the once-mighty oak has picked up too much negative energy from stressed-out shoppers and, once this negativity is eliminated, the tree will flourish again.

A member of the Milton Keynes Reiki Cancer Support Group charity, she has seen the alternative therapy benefit many cancer patients, particularly in reducing the bad side effects of chemotherapy.

"There is no reason Reiki will not work on an oak tree too. The tree surgeons and the official remedies have failed so we have nothing to lose," she said.
