Thieves leave charity workers distraught after break in at Age UK Wolverton
Volunteers and staff at a city charity shop have been left absolutely distraught after a break-in last night.
Staff at the Age UK store in Wolverton discovered the crime this morning when the assistant manager went to work to find the front door had been smashed off its hinges.
Thieves had ransacked the building taking the store’s float of £35 and a full charity collection box thought to have between £30 to £50 in it.
Manager Wendy Goldsmith said: “The first we knew of anything was when the assistant manager went in to work to find the door smashed down and a policeman inside.
“I really feel for all of the staff and the volunteers because everybody puts in their time to make this a success, there have been a lot of tears today, we are all absolutely distraught.”
Wendy was called this morning and made her way into work at around 9.45am to find the shop in disarray.
She said: “Nobody’s safe now. It makes it so much worse that we are a charity, we have had some nice donations over the last few weeks to help fill that box and it was ruined.
“The customers who have visited today have been amazing but now we are hoping that police can find those responsible.”
The store was closed for the morning while police carried out an investigation. It was re-opened in the afternoon after a new door was fitted.
