Three robbed in one street

Thief steals money from couple as they watch TV

A man was metres away from a burglar who broke into his home as he was watching television.

The thief broke into the house in The Limes, Bletchley, through the back door and walked around various rooms ignoring valuables such as guitars, mobile phones and Blackberrys before standing behind the door of the sitting room, just metres away from the victim.

The man, who did not want to be named, said: "I went out for a cigarette after EastEnders and noticed there were bootmarks by the back door.

"I followed them around the house and saw two behind the door, where my partner and I were watching TV.

"We would only have had to turn round for a split second and we could have seen them."

The burglary was one of three in The Limes that took place on Thursday, January 21 and in each instance thieves stole handheld items such as cash, jewellery and mobile phones.

The victim added: "There are some people in the street who wouldn't be as nimble as I am.

"What would happen to them if they were confronted with a burglar? Anything could happen. It doesn't bear thinking about."

Thames Valley Police launched the Dempster scheme to aid elderly and vulnerable people across Bletchley, in cases where burglars had targeted bungalows and homes obviously used by those who were less

likely to be able to defend themselves.

Speaking at a recent briefing, Det Insp Nick Glister said: "We want to

reassure the public that we are doing all we can to reduce these kind of burglaries and make people feel safer in their homes."

He also warned people against leaving valuables, such as car keys and purses, in places that could be easy accessible to thieves.

"Our crime reduction team is good and if the police are alerted then action is prompt."

Det Insp Glister added: "We need family members and neighbours of elderly people to be extra vigilant."
