Town Team funding to boost high streets in Bletchley and Wolverton

TWO towns which were unsuccessful in bidding for help from Queen of the High Street Mary Portas could still receive substantial funding.

Bletchley and Fenny Stratford Town Council and Wolverton Steering Group both put together bids earlier in the year, which were unsuccessful.

Local Government Minister Grant Shapps, who has led the Government’s ‘No High Street Left Behind’ initiative, has written to all MPs in the areas that submitted proposals asking them to take the lead for their communities and show support for their local Town Team by applying for them to become Town Team Partners.

The move will be worth £10,000 to each area.

MP for Milton Keynes South, Iain Stewart, has already pledged his support for Bletchley and Fenny Stratford.

Town clerk, Lisa Courtney, said: “This is brilliant news. Our original plan for the Portas Pilot funding was aimed at creating a night market in Bletchley and there is no reason why we can’t continue with those plans.

“We already have a good team of around 40 councillors, residents, and business owners who have put together the Love Bletchley days. The Love Bletchley Days get great representation from businesses across the town and the latest one will be no different.

“There will be around 100 stalls on the day, on September 15, and some great entertainment from bands to clowns.”

MP for Milton Keynes North, Mark Lancaster, is backing the Wolverton Campaign and will be meeting with organiser Marie Osbourne shortly to finalise plans.

Signed forms, supported by MPs, have to be filled in and will be returned by early December
