Three city schools are out to consultation over expansion plans to help cope with the increased demand for places.

Denbigh School, along with academies at Two Mile Ash and Oakgrove, are speaking to parents and residents about the plans.

The academy at Oakgrove is planning to add 10 classrooms and a second dining hall. It will also carry out refurbishments and improvements as part of a staggered increase in size between 2015 and 2022.

Headteacher Peter Barnes said: “We don’t want to get too big too quickly. We want to make sure we continue to offer pupils a high level of education.”

Denbigh attracts an average of 700 applications per year for 200 available spaces. The expansion would see the school better meet demand with 60 more places a year.

Deputy headteacher, Andy Squires, said: “The expansion would provide substantially enhanced facilities for our students and staff enabling the ‘outstanding’ education and ethos provided by Denbigh School to be available to more children.”

Two Mile Ash is planning an initial change from catering for years three to six to accommodate those in Reception to Year Six.

Some parents at the school are unhappy with the increase and have set up a Facebook group, Friends of Two Mile Ash, to discuss the proposals.

David Lewis commented on the page: “The school was built to have 480 children and play areas were allocated accordingly.”
