Two bodies found in Fishermead fire

Pair thought to be mother and child

Firefighters have recovered the remains of two people killed in a massive fire in Fishermead on Sunday morning.

The bodies, thought to be those of a mother and her child, were found during a detailed and forensic investigation of the property.

The fire broke out early on Sunday morning (5/9) and around 30 firefighters were called in to tackle it after it quickly got out of control.

During the fire, one woman was rescued from a bedroom and crews made their best efforts to search the house to make sure everyone was safely evacuated.

However, the search was majorly hampered by the collapse of floors and ceilings.

One firefighter was taken to hospital after the floor gave way as he was about to reach the room in which the bodies were found.

He was taken to hospital and treated for arm and shoulder injuries but was later discharged.

Assistant chief fire officer, Des Williamson, said: "This is a tragic loss of life and our thoughts are with their relatives and friends.

"The bodies were not found during the initial searches of the scene as firefighters were hampered by the severity of the fire and the amount of debris that had fallen into the room."

Mr Williamson added: "Firefighters searched in the most difficult conditions imaginable. We couldn't have done any more because of the intensity of the fire and the structural collapse within the building."

Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service is investigating the fire safety precautions at the house, the cause of the firefighter's injury and the cause of the fire.
