VIDEO: Become a mini-golf expert

Professional Richard is 'crazy' about the game

The new BMGA mimi-golf series is upon us - so we roped in a professional to give you all some helpful tips on the 'sport'.

With courses at Gulliver's Land, Cosgrove Leisure Park and Willen Lake, mini-golf - or crazy golf as it is better known - is a popular Milton Keynes past-time.

In our video expert Richard Gottfried - who doesn't even play normal golf - reveals the tricks of the trade, including the best way to pot-in-one and the numerous types of balls - varying from the regular golf ball to the 'dead ball', which does what it says on the tin and doesn't bounce.

Along with partner Emily, Richard has been warming up for the start of the new BMGA Tour season, which starts again this weekend with a series of challenge matches at Tea Green Golf.

He said: "There is only a short break in the BMGA season as the first two events of 2010 are played at Indoor Adventure Golf courses and aren't affected by the weather, so we've had to pack in a lot of challenge matches recently.

"I'm pleased with both mine and Emily's performances and am glad to have picked up some good wins and kept active over the break."

Richard beat Emily 43-42 at Jurassic Encounter Adventure Golf in New Malden, while finishing third out of four players over two matches at Adventure Island Mini Golf in Birmingham.

Richard lost to Chris Harding 37-32 at Adventure Island Mini Golf, but beat Emily 26-24 at Kingsway Golf Centre, Melbourn, 47-39 at Indoor Golf FX, Felixstowe, and 23-21 at West Park, Chelmsford.

There was victory for Richard in a four player invitational tournament at the Adventure Golf at Woodside Animal Farm, Slip End, while Richard and Emily defeated John Oxley and Simon Hall 5&3 in a doubles matchplay match at Woodside.

Emily defeated Richard 66-59 over two rounds at the Mini Majors course at Northwick Park, Harrow, while Richard won his other two encounters.

He beat Lester Coles 35-33 and Scott Holmes 38-37, both games at Tea Green Golf.

In addition to the BMGA National Open, which gets the season under way in Birmingham at the weekend, Richard will be competing in around 15-20 further events on the BMGA Tour this year.
