White Hart to be demolished with mental health centre a step closer
The White Hart Pub in Whaddon Way, Bletchley
WORK to demolish the derelict White Hart pub in Bletchley is set to start on Monday.
A specialist demolition and asbestos removal contractor has been appointed with work due to last around four weeks.
Razing the building, which has been derelict for more than six years, will make way for a development by the Cambian Group for a 32-bed, all male mental health facility.
Councillor Elaine Wales, who serves the Whaddon ward, said: “Residents will be relieved to know the clean up work is due to begin. This has already taken far too long and the old site had become an eyesore. I will be working with residents to make sure that there are no more delays.”
However, plans for the rehabilitation centre caused an outcry with opinion divided amid fears about safety and parking
Resident, Amanda Marlow, said: “Delighted it’s going. It’s been an awful eyesore for too long.”
Laura Crisp said: “Most people are harmless, but there will always be a couple who are more of a challenge.
“However with four schools, several nurseries and lots of elderly people living so close, this area is the wrong place for it.”
But Nikki Ibbotson added: “I’m fed up with people going on about how awful it will be to have a unit of perverts and paedophiles living nearby. Plans are not for people with sexual offences to live there. It will be a unit for people with mental health difficulties, helping the service users to reintegrate into society.
“I’d like to think my local community will make our new neighbours feel welcome, aiding their rehabilitation.
“It is important to remember that if we greet the centre with animosity from the start, the outcome is likely to be less than good. I say we should give it a chance.”
