WOBURN Sands Town Council has vowed to fight Tesco’s plans to move into the high street.

The council has joined forced with the Woburn Sands Business and Community Association (WSBCA) after rumours that the supermarket was ready to move into Chinese restaurant Woburn Zens gathered pace.

The council arranged a meeting with Tesco, which confirmed its intention to move into the town, but admitted it would need to apply for planning permission for minor alterations to the rear of the property and car park, as well as changes to the store front.

A strong lobby of opinion has been voiced against the proposal, and after discussions among councillors, the council agreed to support those opposed to the Tesco Express store plans.

A council statement read: “After some discussion, the town council voted to support the actions of the WSBCA in objecting to Tesco’s proposals to move into the High Street.

“The town council and business association will now work together to do what we can to prevent Tesco from opening up at Woburn Zens, since this view seems to reflect the views of a large majority of the population.

“We are anxious to do what we can to preserve the identity and viability of our High Street which has fared relatively well in comparison to others during the recent times of recession.”

So far, more than 1,000 people have added their names to both an online petition and a paper one available at the council offices.
