Woman saved after walking on frozen lake
Firefighters are urging people to stay away from icy waterways following an incident on a frozen lake on Saturday.
Crews from Newport Pagnell, Great Holm and Broughton were called to Willen Lake shortly after 5pm after a woman went on to the ice to try to help a swan.
Station Manager Ian Wilson, who also attended the incident, said: “She thought it was stuck in the ice or injured and she had gone several metres out towards it.
“We managed to talk her off the ice and on to the bank, and she was handed into the care of paramedics because she was suffering from the effects of the cold.”
Water rescue technicians from Newport Pagnell Fire Station then used special equipment to try to reach the swan to see if it was injured, but every time they moved towards it, it moved away from them. They left the scene after about 45 minutes.
Ian said: “People who are tempted to walk or play on frozen waterways, or go to the rescue of animal or birds, face a serious risk of falling through and going under.
“We are urging people not to venture on to the ice under any circumstances, and to call 999 if there is an emergency.”
The Parks Trust and the SaferMK community safety partnership, whose members include Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service, launched a campaign in 2010 called Don’t Dice With Ice.
Their advice is:
Keep away from the water’s edge and under no circumstances go on to the ice.
Be extra vigilant with young children close to the water’s edge.
Keep your dog under control near frozen water.
If you see an accident on the ice, call 999 straight away. Do not attempt to go out on to the ice yourself.
Wear warm clothing and sturdy footwear.
