City rates low for romance

Milton Keynes is a turn-on for shoppers and businessmen...but it leaves lovers cold.

As sweethearts were cooing over Valentine's Day, a top hotel booking agency revealed it did not rate Britain's fastest growing city for romance.

Mr&Mrs Smith – which has a choice of 650 hotels worldwide – was explaining to Julia Cox why it will not list her boutique B&B at South Lodge in Wavendon.

A company employee said in an email that while it had no doubts about her luxury accommodation, added "we don't feel confident that we could send a lot of business to Milton Keynes for couples seeking a romantic weekend away."

Ms Cox said South Lodge was already recommended by other major travel guides.

She believed it would attract a five-star rating as a hotel and if there was a better B&B in the country she would buy the owners a bottle of champagne.

It was fully booked with Valentine's couples last weekend and was "particularly popular for post-nuptial stays".

She said the comment from Mr&Mrs Smith was yet another example of the "poor and inaccurate image" outsiders had of Milton Keynes.

Mr&Mrs Smith chief executive James Lohan said the email was not the company's "official" viewpoint.

But he added: "That said, in all our seven years of booking boutique hotels for our customers, we have never once had a request for a romantic hotel in Milton Keynes."
