THURSDAY is D-Day for the proposed Primark development.
Meetings of Milton Keynes Council’s development control committee don’t often engender masses of interest outside the Civic Offices.
But when councillors meet on Thursday evening there is bound to be plenty of interest.
Because they will be deciding whether or not to approve plans to demolish Secklow Gate Bridge and move the market in favour of a new Primarkl store.
Or as chairman of the committee, Councillor Brian White, said last week: “On one hand we have a £40 million investment in MK as well as 400 retail and 250 construction jobs. On the other we have the relocation of a market and the demolition of a bridge.”
His comments came amid speculation that councillors may defy the advice of officers and approve the scheme.
The proposed scheme was given the thumbs down by officers last week because of the effect it would have on market traders and local heritage.
That suggestion was welcomed by Linda Inoki of protest group Xplain.
“The traders were strongly against the horrible alternative location offered to them,” she said.
“Our shopping centre is fantastically unique and of great national importance. We could not have it ruined.”
The scheme has courted controversy since it was first muted, with hefty petitions submitted to the council from both sides.
