The start of Armed Forces Week is tobe marked with a flag raising ceremony outside the Civic Offices.
The mayor Councillor Subhan Shafiq will formally raise the flag at 10am on June 23 to coincide with Armed Forces Week (June 23-29). The flag will be kept flying until the day after Armed Forces Day on June 28.
The event is organised to help raise awareness of the contribution made by members of the Armed Forces and their families. Mr Shafiq said: “This is a very special year as we mark the 100the anniversary of the First World War and the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings which brings sharply into focus the bravery shown across the generations by our armed forces.”
In 2012 Milton Keynes Council stepped up its support for the Armed Forces by signing a Community Covenant. This sets out to share information about the issues facing serving and retired Armed Forces personnel and to build an understanding of how agencies can provide continued support as well as helping the transition from Service to civilian life and then in the longer term.
