Milton Keynes Council ‘going the extra mile’ following recent adverse weather

Milton Keynes Council staff and their highway service provider Ringway, saw a marked rise in calls caused by the recent flash flooding across the Borough.

Members of the public reported issues including flooded roads, blocked gullies and requests for sandbags.

On several days in June a high amount of rain fell on already saturated ground causing localised flooding.

This also put pressure on the drainage systems which had to cope with large volumes of water in a short space of time.

“Our officers along with Ringway staff have gone the extra mile over the last few weeks responding quickly to flooded areas and assisting concerned residents,” said Cllr Martin Gowans, Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Public Realm.

“Despite the unseasonable weather, the road network has continued to run well and help and assistance has been provided on a 24-7 basis exactly where it was needed,” he added.

The south MK weather station recorded 41.9mm of rainfall on 7 June, when the average for the whole month is 65mm.

The adverse weather has affected a number of Council operations including the bin collections and landscaping.

Three telegraph poles were damaged during thunderstorms including one that was hit by lightning, and staff worked

overnight and at the weekends carrying out inspections and in response to these reports.

Reports included 201 blocked or damage drain/gully calls, 41 flooded roads, 32 missing drain or manhole cover

12 obstruction of a watercourse/ditch, 140 flooded properties and eight flooded underpasses.
