Milton Keynes MPs condemn hate crime

Xenophobic and race related crimes have increased since Brexit. In Milton Keynes MPs Iain Stewart and Mark Lancaster have issued a joint statement condemning the attacks.

They said: ‘Our country has just been through a lively period of campaigning on one of the most important issues facing us. As part of the democratic dividend we all enjoy in a free society, a greater proportion of the British voting population voted to leave the European Union.

‘While we understand and equally respect the strength of feelings on both sides of this debate, as Members of Parliament in Milton Keynes, we unequivocally condemn the xenophobic and race related hate crimes that have followed the referendum. Any such attack is unacceptable.

‘We therefore welcome the creation of the ‘Hate Crime Fund’ recently announced by the Prime Minister, along with a set of new guidelines to prosecutors from the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in better tackling hate crime in our communities.

‘We would urge anyone who has been a victim of racial, religious or other forms of hate crime to report this to the police immediately on 999 for emergency cases or 101 for non-emergency. If unsure, you can contact the Milton Keynes Equality Council’s Hate Crime Group on 0300 123 4148.
