Milton Keynes mum makes five-a-day easy with fruity creations

A mother has revealed a unique way of getting her five-a-day - by turning pieces of fruit and vegetables into astonishing life-like characters.

Lucy Gomes, 57, has a knack for transforming even the most humble of foods into amazing culinary delights that look far too good to eat.

But she’s really made a meal of it and has created thousands of individually carved creations which she shares to a fascinated online audience via instagram and her blog.

“I look at a piece of fruit or vegetable and sometimes I see an animal or character straight away,” Lucy said. “Other times I have an animal in mind, and I will think which fruit or vegetable I could use to make them.”

Lucy, who works for Network Rail, began creating the unique artwork two years ago when she found herself out of work.

Lucy has since completed thousands of edible wonders including a hedgehog out of an avocado, a carriage out of a water-melon and a swan made out of an apple.

She’s also crafted more recognisable figures including Pokemon’s Pikachu and the Disney character Wall-E.

“I once had an idea while peeling my clementine during lunch and went home and sculpted a cat.

Lucy is now sharing her work through two e-Books - Creating Joy! Vegetables and Creating Joy! Fruits, available through Amazon.
