THE city’s Poet Laureate has told the Citizen that robbers involved in this morning’s Fraser Hart raid carried an axe and a lump hammer.
Mark Niel, who holds the title in recognition of his efforts to promote poetry and poets in Milton Keynes, saw thecentre:mk based robbery first hand.
The raid took place at 10.16am at the store on Silbury Arcade in thecentre:mk. Police said three people used sledgehammers to smash windows from inside the store. They then removed items from the Rolex display.
Bosses at thecentre:mk said no-one was injured during the raid.
Mr Niel said: “I was passing Fraser Hart when I heard lots of shouting and saw some people running away from the area.
“I didn’t know if it was a fight or whatever.
“I saw a young man dressed in jogging trousers and casual gear with a cap on and a scarf. He was in the doorway holding an axe.
“Some members of the public were trying to intervene and someone had hit an alarm in the jewellers as there was smoke billowing in the windows.
He added that had he had seen two people, one with an axe and one with a lump hammer.
He said the first man was younger, with a slim, athletic build, while the second was stocky. The faces of both these men were covered.
“One guy was trying to reason with them,” Mr Neil said.
“Then they ran out and a number of people gave chase.
“They escaped to a car, which they reached in about two minutes.
“People were trying to stop them getting into the car. I didn’t get involved, but I was just trying to get details.
“A lot of people were trying to help.”
Mr Niel was apponted as Poet Laureate by Milton Keynes Council and his role includes attending civic events throughout the year.
