J D Wetherspoon pubs in Milton Keynes will drop their prices of food and drink for one day.
On Wednesday, September 25, the pubs are set to reduce their prices by 7.5 per cent to “show the benefit of a VAT reduction to five per cent”.
Currently, food and drink in pubs is subject to 20 per cent VAT, where as supermarkets benefit from a zero per cent tax rate.
The Moon Under Water in Xscape, Wetherspoons in Midsummer Boulevard, The Secklow Hundred in Midsummer Boulevard and Lloyds No.1 Bar in Savoy Crescent, are all backing a national ‘Tax Parity Day’, aimed at highlighting the benefit of a VAT reduction.
Alistair Pringle, manager of Wetherspoons, said: “We are proud to support the campaign to reduce the level of VAT within the pub industry.
“Customers coming to the pubs on Wednesday, September 25 will find the price of their food and drink is lower than normal.
“We are keen to highlight the amount customers would save if VAT in pubs was lowered.
“So, for example, the total price of a meal and drinks for a customer at the pubs would be reduced from £10 to £9.25 on Tax Parity Day.”
