New Mayor for Milton Keynes, Councillor Brian White, announced his pledges to the city for the coming year at a council chamber meeting on Wednesday night.

Mr White began his term in office on a positive note looking to promote the city’s potential on a global scale.

He said: “Milton Keynes is a city that is developing both locally and internationally.

“As one of the areas forecast to lead the country out of recesssion we are ideally placed to take advantage of the new opportunities and create the jobs and skills our people need.”

The meeting was well attended as congratulations were given to the outgoing Mayor, Councillor Catrina Morris.

Mr White revealed that he will instill awareness of the difference that businesses in MK are making, he said: “I will use the Mayoral year to highlight the positive difference growing businesses – most of them small businesses – are making to enhance our local community.

“MK is already network central but innovative spirit will be an example to the rest of the country. The essence of MK is global and local together – not one or the other.”

Ted’s Gang will be one of the charities that Mr White has chosen to support during his time as Mayor.

Based in Stony Stratford, Ted’s Gang works to raise awareness for Shwachman Diamond Syndrome, an inherited genetic condition that affects digestion, growth, immunity and bone marrow.

He will also be supporting the International Campaign to Ban Landmines.

Mr White also took the time to highlight how much Milton Keynes has grown in the past years.

He said: “I am very happy to be Mayor of a city – and for the pendants amongst us, like me, a city is an attitude of mind – which has reached a quarter of a million people and to put that in context we are the same size as – well actually 400 people more than Southampton.”
