The new Mayor of Milton Keynes was appointed last night following the resignation of Councillor Subhan Shafiq.
Councillor Derek Eastman, who represents Newport Pagnell South, is chairman of the Lib Dem Group and chairman of the standards committee.
Mr Eastman said: “Thanks to all for their congratulations.
“It was a night to remember.
“I wish to be an approachable and visible mayor to the benefit of Milton Keynes.”
Mr Eastman’s granddaughter, 23-year-old Nicola Skavydis, was made his Mayoress.
Former Mayor and fellow Lib Dem Mr Shafiq, who remains a councillor, stepped down on August 29 after it emerged that he had personally vouched for a serial rapist who applied for a taxi driver’s licence.
Tory Councillor Keith McLean who represents Olney, will continue in his role as deputy mayor.
