THE countdown to MK’s inaugural marathon on Sunday, April 29 has begun.
With just three months to go entrants have got their training schedules well under way with runners an increasingly common sight along the roads and redways around Milton Keynes.
Andrew Hully, race director of Milton Keynes Marathon, said: “We now have over 4,000 entrants and more than 80 Corporate relay teams.
“We are pulling out all the stops and working hard to make sure everyone, whether running or spectating, has a great day out on April 29.”
Runners are putting in the required training to build up the long runs gradually, with many choosing to attend local running clubs for support.
Martin Lawrence, chairman of local running club, David Lloyd Redway Runners, said: “When our club found out a major new marathon was coming to Milton Keynes and that a number of our runners were interested in taking part we wanted to give as much support as possible,” said Martin.
“We started special marathon training runs and have been amazed that we are getting 50 running with us each week following a structured programme of runs from 10 to 20 miles leading up to the event.”
But the Milton Keynes Marathon will not just be an exciting day for runners, as friends, family and spectators can all enjoy the fun.
The race finishes inside stadium:mk but there will be plenty along the 26.2 mile route to keep them entertained, with bands playing and entertainment for all the family in the Sports & Support Village outside the stadium.
A fact sheet giving full details of the best places to be will appear in the MK Citizen before the event. If you want to run in the race or volunteer to help on race day then visit www.miltonkeynesmarathon.co.uk. Details of the Redway Runners can be found at www.redwayrunners.com.
