A PENSIONER who owned a second home in France claimed more than £27,000 in housing and council tax benefits, a court has been told.

Rose Marylene Fettes, 69, has now been punished with a 12 month community order.

She must complete 180 hours of unpaid work and pay council costs of almost £3,000.

Magistrates heard she was overpaid benefits for 2½ years after making false statements.

She did not declare she had a second property in France and also wrongly claimed her son was her landlord at her home in Taunton Deane, Emerson Valley.

After the case a council spokesman said: “The benefits system is there to help those in genuine need and that is why we will take to court anyone found to be falsely claiming.”
