A PERSONAL trainer beat off competition from triathletes, iron men and the fittest from the military to win the Spartan race in Cambridge.

Russell Godwin, who runs city fitness club Freshfit, joined 17 other group members and nearly 2,000 entrants to take on the 4.5 mile course, which included a 300 metre crawl through an underground tunnel, 8ft wall climbs, jumping over fire and scrambling under barbed wire.

Russell finished with the fastest time of the day in the elite race, despite being sent back to do two obstacles, and will now be competing in the 2012 Super Spartan, an eight mile version of the race.
