Milton Keynes will select a new mayor next week, following the resignation of Subhan Shafiq.

Mr Shafiq, who remains a councillor, stepped down on Friday (August 29) after it emerged that he had personally vouched for a convicted rapist who applied for a taxi driver’s licence.

As the mayoralty is a largely ceremonial role it is rotated by the three main political parties. It is expected that another Liberal Democrat will take over the role, with the part set to nominate Councillor Derek Eastman, councillor for Newport Pagnell South ward, who is currently chairman of the Lib Dem Group and chairman of the Standards Committee.
