Praise and progress in peers’ review of council

THE council has been praised in a review by the Local Government Association.

A team of officer and elected councillors ‘peers’ spent a week in November examining procedures at Milton Keynes Council.

The ‘root and branch style review concluded the council had made considerable progress in previously ‘deeply problematic’ areas such as children’s services, financial management and project and programme management. It also noted the energy and direction provided by the Cabinet.

In a letter to chief executive David Hill, the association’s Chris Bowron wrote: ‘We were impressed by much of what we heard and saw during the peer challenge and are clear there is both firm evidence of significant improvement in the last couple of years and a very exciting future.’
