City MP Mark Lancaster was promoted to junior defence minister by the Prime Minister this morning.
David Cameron announced the MP for Milton Keynes North is the new Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Defence Personnel, Welfare and Veterans.
Mr Lancaster, who is a qualified bomb disposal officer in the Army Reserve, met with Mr Cameron in Downing Street first thing today to be told the good news.
He said: “I am very excited - and today is my birthday.
“Having been a serving soldier for 27 years in Afghanistan, Kosovo and Bosnia, I have some knowledge in this area.
“And to get to work in the Ministry of Defence is a dream job for me, but I have very important issues to work with.
“I look forward to getting stuck in.”
As well as being promoted on his 45th birthday, Mr Lancaster is celebrating his wife’s new job. Caroline Dinenage will be the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Ministry of Justice. She is also Minister for Equalities at Department of Education.
