Volunteers at the Re-use Centre in Kiln Farm handed over hundreds of pounds to the Alzheimers Society today.

The money was collected over the course of six months in a large glass vase by Re-Use Centre’s Margaret Mann and her staff and handed to Lynne Stoodley, Support Services Manager at the Alzheimers Society.

Much of the money came from donations made by visitors to the Reuse Centre itself, but some was also raised at city events - £200 was raised at the Newport Carnival alone.

Lynne said: “It’s a great amount of money that’s been raised – the centre always does so much to help us.”

Margaret, whose mother suffered from dementia, was moved to tears by the donations.

“My mother was my best friend and I was with her and cared for her for her whole life,” she said. “I miss her terribly, but I hope the money people donate can help other Alzheimers sufferers and their families.”

The Reuse Centre is a community project that raises money for Alzheimers charities by encouraging people to donate items that could be re-used rather than being thrown out.
