RESIDENTS across Milton Keynes have helped the city reach a huge landmark.

Over the last 20 years more than 550,000 tonnes of waste has been saved from going into landfill.

When it was launched in September 1992 the scheme was the first in the country to offer door to door recycling services for everyone.

Originally the service helped to get rid of four per cent of waste as recycling. Today the figure stands at 56 per cent.

All waste is collected by Serco and taken to the Council’s Material Recycling Facility, operated by Viridor.
