MARKET traders will protest outside the council offices next week as the delay in repairing the Secklow Gate bridge rumbles on.

Led by members of Urban Eden and Xplain, the protest will be held ahead of next Tuesday’s Milton Keynes Council meeting.

Linda Inoki, leader of Xplain, will speak out against the hold up and urge the council to reopen the bridge.

A fire more than a year ago forced the council into closing the bridge.

It is the only route directly through thecentre:mk, and as yet there are no plans to re-open it.

Last month members took part in a protest on the first anniversary of the fire, asking why it still was not opened.

Theo Chalmers, chairman of Urban Eden said: “It is a massive detour to get around the centre without that route. And we just can’t understand why this is taking so long.

“By law, the council can only keep the temporarily road closed for 18 months before the Secretary of State has to become involved to investigate the closure.”

The motion wants to ‘alert the council to serious traffic disruption due to the continued closure of Secklow Gate Bridge in Central Milton Keynes, and the detrimental effect on small businesses trading in the open air market below.’
