Station Square: Gateway to Milton Keynes may be 97 high-rise flats

Almost 100 homes could be built on Station Square – the most important patch of land in the city.

Labour Cabinet members this week quietly identified the rail station site as potentially suitable for 97 homes, possibly in a high-rise development.

Already the proposals have been slammed as “preposterous” by objectors.

The patch of open space, which is between the bus lanes and Elder Gate, has impressed architects worldwide as the gateway to the city.

“It’s open, it’s modernist and it’s a breath of fresh air. It’s everything Milton Keynes stands for and it would be outrageous and preposterous to fill it with homes,” said Linda Inoki, chairman of city campaign group Xplain.

Station Square was one of 69 suggested sites put forward on Tuesday at a one-man meeting chaired by cabinet member Public Realm, Mick Legg.

Other controversial proposals include 20 homes on Bletchley’s Albert Street car park, 76 on part of John Lewis car park and 11 at Lady of Lourdes Church on Coffee Hall.

So far the biggest protest has come from residents of Springfield and Downs Barn, where 10 public green spaces have been identitifed for dozens of “infill” homes.

Residents shouted objections from the public gallery as Councillor Legg approved all the proposals to go out to consultation.

Ward Councillor Peter Mcdonald has now recalled the decision so it can be debated by all political parties.

Public consultation begins on February 18. MeanwhileLabour leader Pete Marland has stressed this is simply an “evaluation of available land” to meet official criteria.

It follows last year’s strategy plan where sites were picked for 1,750 new homes.
