Breast Cancer Care is launching its first ever support session for people living with the incurable disease in and around Milton Keynes.
The monthly Living with Secondary Breast Cancer sessions will give people the chance to meet and talk with others who understand what it means to live with the life-limiting diagnosis.
The first session will be held at the Milton Keynes Community Foundation on Monday, May 9, from 9.45am until 4pm.
Secondary breast cancer cannot be cured but can be treated and controlled.
Jaff Newton, 74, from Milton Keynes, was diagnosed with secondary breast cancer over 10 years ago and she has been attending support in Oxford and will now be able to start attending the sessions closer to home.
The mum of three grown-up children said: “When I was told I had incurable breast cancer over ten years ago there was no support. So going to a Living with Secondary Breast Cancer group made a massive difference, meeting others with the same questions, worries and hopes.
“Secondary breast cancer can be rollercoaster of appointments, treatments and emotions. These sessions offer help to put things into perspective, making it all just that bit easier to cope.”
The sessions will also offer a unique opportunity to hear from experts about different aspects of the disease and explore its impact on people’s lives and relationships
Sylvia Ward, head of UK-Wide services at Breast Cancer Care, said: “Talking openly and honestly with others who understand what it means to live with secondary breast cancer offers such vital support. And having expert speakers provides a huge wealth of information.
“So whether someone has questions after an initial diagnosis, is looking for tips about dealing with the day-to-day challenges, or just a space to relax, chat and share, Living with Secondary Breast Cancer is always there.”
Living with Secondary Breast Cancer is free of charge, but anyone interested in attending must register in advance by contacting a member of Breast Cancer Care’s Services team on 0345 077 1893 or firstname.lastname@example.org to guarantee a place.
