Temporary speed limit ‘minor inconvenience’

‘Essential’ improvements will see temporary speed restrictions imposed on 27 grid roads across the city over the next 18 months.

The 40mph limits will be introduced on one of two sections of the roads at a time while work takes place as part of a £50million road regeneration scheme.

The work will include pothole repairs, street lighting, grass cutting, litter picking and other maintenance jobs.

Cabinet member for transport and highways, Councillor John Bint, said: “We will carry out the work on one or two sections at a time and we will aim to keep disruptions to a minimum.

“There will be some inconvenience but I hope that people will be able to put up with that so essential improvements can be done.”

Dozens of Citizen readers responded to the news on our Facebook page.

One, John Bailey, said: “The trouble with ‘temporary’ measures introduced by bureaucrats is that they have a habit of becoming permanent. Leave the roads alone unless you’re actually working on them.”

And Heather How wrote: “If it’s being done as a temporary thing to let the council employees carry out maintenance in a safer environment while they are actually working on that particular road, and the signage to say the speedlimit is different is large and clear, I have no problem with it.”
