Test of strength for rival pubs

Pub regulars pulled their weight during a hefty tug of war challenge at the weekend.

The traditional ‘War of Wollaston’ saw the two village pubs, the Cross Keys and the Barge Inn, locked in combat

The incentive was free beers for the winning team.

Amid much cheering, the Barge regulars tugged to a 2 -1 victory with the help of anchorman Alistair Martin.

Computer engineer Alistair, who lives only a rope’s length away from the Barge, said: “I’m a customer of both pubs but Bryan at the Barge invited me first.

“It feels good to be on the winning side. Everyone pulled their weight and the winners’ beer after tasted specially sweet.”

Losing Cross Keys landlady Charmaine Vaz took the defeat in good spirit.

“We’re not cross about losing. But the pubs will remain in battle,” she said.

“In fact our head chef Jonny now wants a re-match. But next time it will be between our chefs in both pub kitchens. Hopefully the knives won’t be out.”
