Nothing quite beats the smell of freshly baked bread – and a new artisan bakery in Stony Stratford is testament to the fact.

Since opening its doors in July, Woodstock Bakery has quickly attracted a wealth of loyal customers harking back to a time when all baked goods could be bought only from the local baker.

“In recent years, people in Britain have become increasingly interested to know exactly where their food comes from and how it is made,” said Matthew Lane, the owner of Woodstock’s Bakery.

“This is why we chose to set up the business.”

With a baker working on site, Woodstock’s products are prepared and baked from scratch, a rare concept in this day and age when it is so easy to nip to the local supermarket and buy a cheap, seedy loaf.

“Our bread is made with only flour, water, salt and yeast, so there is no trace of chemical,” added Matthew.

With a bright exterior and welcoming wide range of breads and baked goods on display, Woodstock Bakery is proud to demonstrate a fresh approach to a long established trade.

Produce includes tasty and tangy sourdoughs, traditional bloomers and tin loafs, continental breads such as foccacias, ciabattas, ryes and French breads, while mouth-watering croissants, pain au chocolate and pain au raisin are among some of the patisserie on offer.

“Stony Stratford was lacking an independent bakery with fresh produce, something that, until a few years ago, the town had always had,” said customer Joe Clinch.

“I am very pleased to see it open, and I hope it thrives.”

Not only is the bakery rising to the challenge of producing freshly-baked goods for a new demanding customer base, the store also provides a personable service.

“Because we’re a small business, we get to know our customers and can offer them all we know about bread,” said Tom, a member of the team.

“Many people who come in are inspired to bake their own, which we give them advice with.”

With an independent butchers also prospering on the high street, it is clear that Stony Stratford is meeting the ever-growing demand for small trades going back to basics to offer fresh produce and good old fashioned service.
