Touch of Pink provides touch of class for hospital

The city has gone baking-mad this May with the Touch of Pink Bake Off, in aid of the Breast Care Unit at Milton Keynes Hospital.

From cupcakes to sponges, scones to lemon drizzle, people have been baking and selling their wares for the appeal’s Bake Off, which takes place throughout May.

Supporters include local school Stantonbury Campus, who held a Touch of Pink day on May 24. The catering team at Stantonbury Campus raffled a giant cupcake to staff and students while wearing pink to promote their fundraising.

Tanya Boulter, Catering Manager, organised the event. She said: “We are especially keen to support the appeal as breast cancer has affected one of our own recently. We hope that we have helped to raise awareness among students and staff at the Campus. And we have raised a bit of money towards the scanner at the breast care unit too!”

Other budding bakers include Oldbrook First School, Zumba MK and local company Produban. Local cake maker Hilary’s Cakes donated some designer cakes to help the cause, too – including the auction of a bespoke Touch of Pink sponge cake, which went for £55!

Staff members at the hospital are also involved, with bake sales taking place in the main reception area – the hospital’s own bakers include nurses, doctors and staff in various wards and departments. One of the hospital’s corporate supporters – Pictons LLP, based in Central Milton Keynes – is holding three sales at the hospital. The first one alone raised £300.

Fundraising Manager Vanessa Holmes is delighted with the number of people who got on board to bake. She said: “The beauty of the Touch of Pink Bake Off is that anyone can get involved and raise some funds. You can hold your event at home or your place of work, and make it as small or large as you like. Every bake sale will make a huge difference to the appeal so please contact us for more details.”

Touch of Pink is raising £80,000 for a new digital x-ray machine, which will further improve the service offered to patients in and around Milton Keynes. The new machine will shorten result waiting times, reduce the need for second operations and allow more patients to be seen every day.
