The UK’s first deaf stonemason has been shortlisted for a national award.

National deaf charity Signature has announced the shortlists for the 2015 Signature Annual Awards and Milton Keynes-based Louis Francis is in the running for the Entrepreneur award, with winners to be announced on October 9.

Louis worked with learning and skills charity Shaw Trust to set up his business, Francis Stone Design, which creates unique artwork using traditional craftsmanship skills and methods.

Thanks to glowing recommendations, Louis can now boast a wide portfolio of work and customers, including a sought-after commission for Windsor Castle which saw Louis create a bespoke gargoyle for St George’s Chapel as part of the major restoration of the existing gargoyles.

Louis, who has been running his business for almost a year, said: “I have been busy since the day I started the business, which is great for me and very exciting as I love what I do. I am very proud of my achievements and this recognition from Signature.”
