Speaking to the Citizen outside Milton Keynes Police Station following the discovery of the body, LPA Commander Supt Gez Chiariello said: “I’m sorry to have to say that a body was found at 3.20pm this afternoon.

“Although not formally identified, the body matches the description of our missing person.”

A large police presence cordoned off Furzton Lake at the south side around Lynmouth Crescent at 4.30pm today.

Members of the public were prevented from walking on the footpaths.

Mr Chiariello said he did not believe the circumstances are suspicious but as with any missing person a “certain procedure” must follow.

He said: “We are conducting forensic analysis so we have an idea exactly what happened to Alex.

“I would like to stress the body has not been formally identified - we think it is Alex, but there is no confirmation of that.”

CCTV led officers to believe Alex had made his way home via Furzton Lake, so began searching the area yesterday afternoon.

Mr Chiariello confirmed Alex’s family had been informed and urged the public to show them respect and dignity.

He said: “The family are clearly very upset, as we are, it’s a very sad day.

“Alex was a young lad, very popular. He had been on a night out with some friends from work and had a good evening.

“It is an unfortunate set of circumstances that were very out of character for him in terms of him going missing or not making contact with family or friends.”
