THE traditional ceremony of Setsubun is a Japanese is a celebration on the eve of the beginning of the new season.

On Sunday at the Buddhist Temple in Willen, almost 100 people gathered to expel bad spirits, and welcome in good health and peace.

Colourful youngsters wearing demon masks represented the bad spirits, while people aged in multiples of 12 threw roasted soya beans and sweets to represent positive spirits.

Sister Maruta said: “It is about hope, postivity, eternal peace and good health.

“The throwing of the beans represents dispelling negative energy, and welcoming in the positives.”
