Volunteers - Help children Ride High

THE Volunteer Centre, Milton Keynes provides an essential service to local not for profit organisations in recruiting volunteers.

This week it focuses on Ride High.

RIDE High is a registered charity which aims to change the prospects of some of Milton Keynes’ most disadvantaged children. It achieves this by:

> Teaching them to ride and care for horses

> Helping to develop key social and academic skills through an associated programme of clubroom activities

> Providing long term membership – the children attend every week and have a chance to develop a support network of friends and adults

> Taking the children on educational, fun trips out

> Supporting the children with volunteering and arranging work experience placements

Ride High provides access for more than 50 children a week and relies on a team of volunteers, some of whom help with clubroom activities and some with driving the children to and from the club. Ride High is based just two minutes off the A5 near Great Brickhill.

The organisation depends on volunteers and this is an opportunity to join a close knit team that is making a real difference to some of the area’s most desperate children.

Members have lots of fun, organise regular training and social events and accompany kids on amazing trips out. Currently it have the following opportunities:

> Clubroom Leaders and Assistants

As well as teaching the children to ride and care for horses the organisation works on a wide range of horse-related clubroom projects all designed to develop the children’s social skills, ability to work as a team, confidence and self esteem – quizzes, word searches, arts and crafts.

It also watches and helps out with their riding lessons. Each two-hour session for eight children is supported by at least two Ride High workers.

If you like working with children you will love this – it is the most rewarding thing we do as we see the children bond as a group and become carefree, happy children again.

>Administrator – no horse experience necessary

This would suit someone who would be able to give from three to eight hours per week to help with administration and general work around the clubroom. This might involve sending out referral forms, chasing up missing forms, organising transport arrangements and co-ordination of clubroom resources.

> Drivers

Can you help to drive the children to and from their club sessions? You must hold a full clean UK driving licence and either possess an enhanced CRB or be prepared for the be prepared for the organisation to apply for one on your behalf.

> Fundraising support

Ride High raises a significant proportion of its income from fundraising events and donations. It is looking for people with some experience in fundraising to join the events team.

The team meets at least once a month in the evenings and gets involved in a wide range of local projects.

Do you have accountancy, HR or project management skills?

Ride High is embarking on a major new project to expand its service. It is looking for volunteers with those skills who would be interested in joining a team looking at strategic and operational development of Ride High in 2011.
