A MAN was hospitalised and another 12 were treated at the scene at a fire in a block of flats in Wolverton early on Tuesday morning.

Firefighters from Milton Keynes, Newport Pagnell, Buckingham and Aylesbury were called to the incident at The Gables in St Georges Way, Wolverton, at 1.14am. There were nearly 50 firefighters and officers at the scene.

The fire started outside a flat on the seventh floor and caused smoke to fill the lobby. Smoke also filtered through an open door and up the stairwell into the common areas of the eighth and ninth floors.

Group Manager Dave Norris, one of the officers who attended the incident, said: “We worked closely with our colleagues from Thames Valley Police and South Central Ambulance Service to ensure that everyone received help.

“The fire is currently being treated as suspicious and we are now investigating so that we can confirm the cause.”

Volunteers from the British Red Cross also attended in their Fire and Emergency Support Service vehicle, based at Bletchley Fire Station.
