Work is underway to level off the pitch at Wavendon Recreation Ground after nearly 80 years of football on the surface.
Woburn Lions Football Club expect the playing surface to be ready for action in April 2014.
To help the project, Wavendon has been given almost £9,000 of grant funding.
There are tales of the history of the pitch, with one infamous example seeing a visiting goalkeeper having to be defrosted from the match ball at a nearby pub after becoming frozen in an iced-over gully.
Woburn Lions manager Robert Hill said: “We’ve had a lot of fun with the humps and bumps, but a level surface is vital to help our young players develop to their full potential.”
