WWII soldier from Milton Keynes captured the heart of his German girl

A soldier who fell in love with a German girl on VE Day has been awarded a medal 71 years on.

Leonard Granger was this week presented with the French Legion of Honour for his efforts in defending France during the Second World War.

Leonard, who is 91 and aptly lives in Normandy Way, Bletchley, took part in the D Day landings as a soldier in the Royal Artillery.

He fought right through France and Holland and ended up in Germany when the declaration came that the war was over.

Leonard promptly met Ella, who captured his heart.

She accompanied him to England and the couple enjoyed 60 years of happy marriage before Ella died two years ago.

Leonard worked as a police officer for the Metropolitan Police before retiring to Bletchley.
