Excellent rides from Richard Cartland, Mark Wordsworth and Simon Gaywood resulted in Team Corley Cycles-Alpha RC playing a significant role in the latest round of the increasingly competitive British Cycling Premier Calendar.

The 140-strong field had to make their way north of Newcastle for the 170km Beaumont Trophy road race.

The field was headed by double Olympic gold medallist Bradley Wiggins, who used his superior strength and fitness to dominate the race, proving he is nearing top form ahead of the forthcoming Tour de France.

It was Wiggins who launched the main break of the day after the front riders had gone through the feeding zone towards the end of the second lap of the circuit. But he was quickly joined by seven other riders, including Team Corley duo Cartland and Wordsworth.

After approximately 70 miles Wiggins' strength broke that group as he took four other riders with him, which this time didn't include Wordsworth and Cartland.

But further back Gaywood was putting in a superb performance, passing slower riders and moving up the peloton to form a second group around himself.

Following the pattern of the race as a whole, that group started to splinter in the run-up to the line leaving Gaywood to come home in a tired but satisfying 11th place.

"Because of the last couple of Tour Series events I have been left feeling really tired, so I am really pleased with that result," he said.

At the last Tuesday night LVRC league race at the National Bowl, Spencer Tresham and Don Parry took race wins in their respective groups after an hour's super-fast racing.

Tresham was in a break of five riders that formed after three laps and after lapping the entire field he won the sprint for the chequered flag.

In Parry's similar distanced race, his group was still together at the finish leaving him to also outsprint his rivals to win his race.
