The men from the Milton Keynes Hockey Club have failed in their bid to gain promotion.
Milton Keynes missed out on automatic promotion from the 1st XI Middlesex, Berks, Bucks and Oxon Regional League when finishing second to High Wycombe, Milton Keynes finishing just three points adrift of the champions, losing three, drawing two and winning the remaining 17 games.
But finishing runners-up meant they qualified for the end of season play-offs at Hazelmere where another three teams were aiming for the one promotion spot into the 1stXI Premier League Division Two.
Milton Keynes, who had been well led by captain Russ Brazier during the regular season, faced London Wayfarers in the first of the semi-finals, the London side sealing a 4-2 win and securing their promotion.
Wayfarers showed great organisation against a tenacious Milton Keynes side and they took the lead in the second minute at a short corner only for Milton Keynes to equalise thanks to Toby King.
Wayfarers regained the lead on 21 minutes but their keeper pulled off a superb double save just before half time to keep his side ahead, Wayfarers breaking away to take a 3-1 lead into half time.
Wayfarers added their fourth goal after a Milton Keynes yellow card in the second half, Ali McColl scoring a late second for Milton Keynes.
The other semi-final saw Worthing beat Trojans 3-2 with Wayfarers sealing promotion with their 3-2 win over Worthing in the play-off final.
Milton Keynes' defeat should not detract from a very successful season that also saw the club's veterans lift the Bucks Cup with a 3-2 win over Slough.
