Cup final despair for out of character City
MILTON Keynes were beaten 21-3 by High Wycombe in the final of the Bucks Cup at Field Lane on Saturday.
It was the first time City had reached the final for 25 years as a bright sunny morning eventually made way for the heavens to open and rain on City's parade.
With the wet conditions it was going to be hard for either side to play their expansive games, but Wycombe soon showed their intent to use their big forwards to win the ball and provide a good platform for their outside half to kick for field position.
With only 10 minutes gone, a missed tackle cost City dear as Wycombe crossed the line for an unconverted try putting them 5-0 ahead.
City defended well for the most part with the back row of John MacDonald, Shaun White and Steve Christie making some big hits. But midway through the half their concentration slipped and Wycombe extended their lead to 8-0 with a penalty.
Despite City responding with a ten minute spell of pressure, it was Wycombe who went over for another unconverted try giving them a 13-0 half time lead.
In the second half City found the elements in their favour and began to test the visiting defence, but still found it hard going driving the big Wycombe forwards backwards.
But with 15 minutes left City were awarded a penalty which Alan White kicked between the uprights to reduce the deficit to just three points.
However Wycombe soon hit back with a penalty of their own and with the clock ticking down also had time to run in another try to give them the 21-3 win.
It was a spirited show from City who now have to focus on next weekend's game against Aylesbury.
