DESPITE topping the table for six months, the Dons went into the crunch period of April sitting in second place.

And after securing the Johnstone's Paint Trophy against Grimsby in March there were fears from fans that Paul Ince's men might go off the boil.

But he and Ray Mathias promised that wouldn't happen and they were true to their word as they went to Lincoln for a tough game on a Friday night and returned with three points.

They picked up a slightly undeserved 2-1 win at Sincil Bank thanks to goals from Carl Regan and Jemal Johnson, and although it wasn't pretty to watch the Dons were firmly back on track.

The next challenge was Wrexham at home, a side fighting for their lives at the bottom of League Two. But Dons showed them little sympathy and why they were destined for League One with a 4-1 win, despite only showing rare glimpses of any attacking prowess.

It meant the Dons were now just one win away from sealing promotion and had the mouth-watering prospect of doing it when rivals Wycombe came to stadium:mk on April 12.

Unfortunately Wyc-ombe weren't sent the script and a Scott McGleish double almost spoiled the day altogether, only for Sean O'Hanlon to head a late, late equaliser to save Dons' blushes.

They had another chance to confirm promotion three days later against Hereford, but the Bulls spoiled the game with an unadventurous display. Nevertheless it still meant that Dons were four points clear of Posh in second-place, needing just one more point to be sure of promotion.

But they went one better at Edgeley Park as they twice came from behind to seal a vintage victory over fourth-placed Stockport County thanks to Keith Andrews' spectacular chip.

It was another superb performance away from home and left Dons needing just one more win from either of their remaining two games to seal the title.

And they didn't waste any time as they recorded their 18th away win of the season at Bradford last weekend, sparking spectacular celebrations amongst players and fans alike.
