Defender opens up about his Dons concerns
Sol Davis has admitted his relief at earning himself a contract until the end of the season, suggesting he feared for his career being on a month-to-month deal.

The reliable left-back recently signed a deal until the end of the current campaign after impressing boss Paul Ince with his attitude and in his limited time on the pitch.

The 30-year-old – who was already based in Milton Keynes after plying his trade at Luton Town for the past seven years – said he knew the importance of gaining a longer stay with Dons.

"There is a lot of pressure on you with a month-to-month deal as when you do get the chance to play you have to perform," he said.

"Any injuries you get you think that's it – my contract is over, so it's very worrying.

"I was really worried in the summer not knowing where I was going to be and then a month-to-month deal was offered and it was better than nothing.

"So when the chance came I was glad for the opportunity I was given to try and get a contract, which thankfully the gaffer has now given me.

"I am settled in Milton Keynes. I have been here four years and have got family here and wanted to stay in the area.

"I did have the option of moving south but it would have been about four hours away, so instead I took a chance with the trial at Dons and luckily it paid off."

Davis started three games for Dons at the start of the season when Dean Lewington had flu and then a head injury.

In those appearances he quickly gained the respect of the club's fans who were impressed with his tough tackling, clever defending and no nonsense approach.

He has well over 300 Football League starts to his name but said he doesn't mind playing the number two role to the long-serving Dons skipper.

"I always knew I was going to be a back-up anyway, I was told that and I haven't got a problem with it," he said.

"I am a part of the squad now and when I'm given a chance to start I will give everything to do as good a job as what Deano does.

"I was lucky enough to get a few chances when he had a few niggles and an illness so I played a couple of games and enjoyed it."

Davis will now get a chance to shine again as the skipper has recently picked up a two-match ban. And he is just concentrating on doing his best for the side.

"I will do exactly what I have done in the other games and give everything that I've got to do my job well."

Davis is most notably known for suffering a stroke in 2006 on the way to Luton's match at Ipswich Town. But he battled back from the life-threatening condition, earning himself the admiration of people across the football community, especially from Ince.

"Sol is a great pro and a great player who comes in and plays hard," said the Dons boss.

"He gives it his all and the lads love him. I still think we are a quiet team as we haven't got enough big voices and are still lacking in that experience department.

"But Sol gives us that and I know he will do a very good job for us."
