IT WAS a case of so near yet so far for the Marshall Milton Keynes Lions at last weekend's British Basketball League Championship play-offs, but head coach Vince Macaulay has insisted that final defeat to Guildford takes nothing away from the club's most successful season in its history.
After seeing off Newcastle Eagles in the first semi-final of Finals Weekend at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham, Lions fell to a 100-88 defeat to Guildford in what was to prove to be a frustrating afternoon for Macaulay.

"We started on fire and soon raced into a 10-point advantage, but unfortunately the referee made playing our natural game too difficult," said the Lions coach.

"I'm pleased with the way my guys played, we always rise to the challenge – as Newcastle found out.

"But it's so frustrating when the referee is giving so many petty fouls against you and giving you nothing back in return. Our lack of free throws tells you everything."

Even with decisions going against them Lions clawed back to trail by just seven points at 89-82 before all hopes were dashed by four foul shots in quick succession after a technical foul was called on Macaulay.

But despite the immediate disappointment of defeat, the Lions coach will be able to look back on a great season with immense pride, the club winning their first piece of silverware by beating the Newcastle Eagles in the BBL Cup.

"The BBL Cup win, getting to the play-off final and winning the coach of the year award make this an incredible season for myself and the whole team.

"Sure it'll take us a couple of weeks to get over this defeat but we'll soon realise what a great success the season has been."

Attention now turns to preparations for next season, with chief executive Macaulay still uncertain as to whether he'll carry on as head coach.

"We're going to be meeting with the players and staff on Thursday and we'll take it from there. I've not allowed myself to think about anything other than the play-offs for the last few weeks so I've not given it much thought.

"But if it was down to all the letters of support I've had then the decision would be easy."
