JUST 16 ounces separated the top four in Saturday’s Alders open – despite them netting a quarter of a ton of carp between them!

Gary Thorpe weighed-in 165-8, and just one pound adrift of that, Rob Lett, Alan Wayman and Martin Green ALL had 164-8 each.

Things had quietened down by next day when B Mason won with 82lb, followed by G Thorpe 76-3 and M wells 68lb.

Matt Grant won Osprey’s match after another long haul to Rockalls in Essex by taking 80-2, ahead of Peter Carter 52lb and Lol Sommers 46-2.

The legal river fishing season may be over until June 16, but reports are still emerging of big ‘final days’ fish – with Adam Short outstanding on Olney’s Ouse with five chub from 5lb to 7-13 for 29-9.

On only his second ever day’s chubbing Duncan Menzies (pictured) bagged a 7-6 from the Wolverton Ouse. Mate and neighbour Rob Buckner had put him on his favourite swim, given him tips... and then had to watch his prodigy beat HIS personal best by two ounces.

Previously a dyed-in-the-wool ‘commercial’ fan, Duncan is now panting for next winter’s big chub action.

Gary Maton had three chub, 5lb to 6-2, on Stone Park. I had a 5 by Haversham bridge, and Matt Snee a 2-12 perch from the Emberton Park Ouse the day after a 2-6 from the canal.

MK Vets’ ‘last day’ match on the Stony Ouse saw Bob Gale win with two fish: a 7-9 bream and a 2-12 perch. Alan Ford caught 9-4 and Ernie Sattler 8-14.

It was carp or bust in Towcester’s Bairstows match as Dave Martin won with 35lb followed by Mick Goodridge 12lb and Brian Beard 4-11.

James Lewis won Calvert’s Claydon lake sweep with 10-13. Dave Lewis had 10-3 and Barry Witteridge 3-10.

Andy Jones won Towcester Vets’ Astwell Mill knock-up with 8-15 of roach as George Cooke had 6-7 and John Ballhatchet 6-7.

An end peg on Bailleys cut saw Paul Chapman with 6-6 of perch to 2-15 in DATS’ do. Gary Britton had 3-14-8 at the other end peg and Ernie Sattler – in the middle for once – 3-8...of solid gudgeon!
