MILTON Keynes doesn’t quite have its first confirmed 2012 London Olympian, but Mervyn Luckwell is well on his way having just beaten the official qualifying standard for the javelin.

The 26-year-old set a new personal best throw of 83.52 meters at the Final Fling Open Throws Meeting in Wrexham at the weekend, also setting a new Milton Keynes Athletic Club record and moving him up to sixth place in the UK All Time Rankings – topped by three-time Olympic medallist Steve Backley.

Although Luckwell has reached the Olympic qualifying standard, he hasn’t yet booked his place at the London Games as he needs to repeat his achievement in an official qualifying competition after April 1, 2012, and finish in the top two in next year’s UK Championships.

However, his huge throw of 83.52m – breaking his previous record of 81.05m – is a significant step in the right direction for Luckwell who failed to make this year’s World Championships in South Korea after a season plagued by injury.
